Celebrate Cinco de Mayo at Parklife Taqueria

Spring has officially sprung, and we don’t know a better way to celebrate than to eat tacos under the sun. Parklife Taqueria, a Gowanus restaurant with a sprawling outdoor space, had the same idea. Stop by for a Sunset Session, a daytime DJ dance party full of good tunes and good eats, running every weekend until they end with a bang for a special Cinco de Mayo party.

Not just anyone could think to combine Persian, Mexican, and Texan flavors, but Michelin-trained chef Scott Koshnoodi did. As chef and co-owner of Parklife, he recently took inspiration from his Persian-Texan roots to revamp a unique and exciting new menu.

You can get a taste of Texas with a classic frito pie appetizer, a migas breakfast plate offered for brunch, or a burnt ends taco with perfectly smoky, succulent brisket only available on weekends. Persian flavors permeate throughout the menu, like the lamb beriyani taco topped with a sprinkle of sumac, or the loaded queso served with joojeh kabob—tender chicken marinated in yogurt and saffron.

Along with a variety of tacos, Parklife offers popular Mexican dishes that can be harder to find in the city: tlacoyos, or stuffed masa pockets, and tlayudas, also known as “Oaxacan pizza.” For a tlacoyo with a little Southern comfort, the chicken fried steak tlacoyo is a fan favorite. The steak tastes good enough to serve on its own, but you might as well smother it in chicken gravy and pair it with heirloom beans and a creamy avocado sauce.

After your meal, feel free to dance the rest of the day away during a Sunset Session, which starts at 4 pm and ends whenever the sun sets. The last Session will take place May 5th for a Cinco de Mayo party featuring Parklife resident DJ Tres Dos and special guest Pana Li from Mexico City. They’ll be playing a selection of international vinyl to celebrate Mexican culture in the US. For more info, go to https://www.instagram.com/parklifebk/.
